Instructions for and materials required of applicants for Thespian scholarship auditions

at the Louisiana Thespian Festival.

 

READ INSTRUCTIONS, GUIDELINES AND ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS CAREFULLY. FAILURE TO FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS WILL CAUSE INELIGIBILITY.

 

BEFORE THE FESTIVAL

  1. Directors should download from the google folder the Audition Application, Performance and Technical Scholarship Guidelines/ Eligibility, Example of “Expected Resume” and distribute to interested seniors.

  2. Resumes MUST resemble the “Expected Resumes,” are limited to one page, and MUST BE TYPED! No hand-printed resumes will be accepted. File must be submitted as a pdf.

  3. Photos must be submitted as an 8 x 10 head shot only in pdf or jpeg format.

  4. The Thespian Scholarship Application Form must be typed. Hand written forms will be accepted.

  5. Indicate type of audition by circling either Performance or Technical in the appropriate space.

  6. The Scholarship Application and all materials are to be submitted by the deadline of FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2019.

  7. NO materials will be added to ANY applicant's packet after the deadline.

  8. NO materials will be accepted for processing after the deadline OR at the Festival.

  9. NO substitutions are allowed at the auditions.

  10. TBA’s are not allowed.

  11. Directors must notify Audition Coordinator as soon as possible in the event a student drops out of the audition Process.

  12. A non-refundable payment of $20.00 must be included with the Festival Registration Fee. (One Check Only)

  13. Waiting areas for Performance & Technical Scholarships must remain clear & quiet!

  14. FAILURE TO COMPLETE PORTIONS OF REQUIRED FORMS AND/OR TO SUBMIT ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS BY THE DEADLINE WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION OF THE APPLICANT.

 

AT FESTIVAL

  1. Applicants must attend the mandatory Audition Workshop on Friday of the Conference.

  2. Group assignments will be announced at the Friday Audition Workshop. NO changes will be made in assignments. Applicants for the performance auditions will be randomly divided into two groups.

  3. Presentation interviews for Technical Scholarship applicants will commence at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

  4. Performance Auditions will commence at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

  5. ALL Times are subject to change by the Audition Coordinator, Chapter Director or Festival Chair.

 

Performance Guidelines

Performance Scholarship Guidelines

  • One $900.00 scholarship and two $450.00 scholarships will be awarded in this category.

  • The emphasis during the audition should be on presentation and performance.

  • No special lighting will be available.

  • The audition may be conducted in a large auditorium or a small classroom. Be prepared to adapt to any space used.

  • You will be provided with two straight chairs and one small table, which you may arrange prior to your introduction. You may not use additional set pieces, hand props or costumes.

  • CANDIDATES SHOULD DRESS WITH A POLISHED, PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE. JEANS, SANDELS, FLIP-FLOPS SNEAKERS, MINISKIRTS AND SOLID BLACK ARE NOT ALLOWED!

  • The candidate’s introduction should ONLY include their name, school and titles & authors of the selections.

  • All auditions must be solo presentations. Other students may not perform with the auditioning candidate.

  • All auditions will be a maximum of three (3) minutes. If the candidate exceeds this limit, time will be called and disqualification will result. Time will begin after the introduction of the selection.

  • The candidate must thoroughly prepare two (2) contrasting selections from plays. Plays must be from published theatrical literature only! A song and/or dance may be performed as one of the selections. Material (music or script) must be drawn from published scripts written for theatre. Works from other forms such as film, poetry, fiction or standard popular song lyric/instrumental are not permitted. If such a musical audition is planned, sheet music must be provided, an accompanist will be provided. The total time limit for presentation remains a total of three (3) minutes.

  • Interviews may be requested of the student after auditions. Be prepared to answer questions!

  • It is the individual’s responsibility to secure permission from the publisher.

  • THESE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE GIVEN TO DESERVING CANDIDATES AS DETERMINED BY THE JUDGES. IT IS TO THE JUDGE’S DISCRETION IF THE SCHOLARSHIPS SHOULD BE AWARDED. If there is only one candidate in Performance Scholarship, it does not necessitate an immediate scholarship to that candidate.

  • Scholarship winners are announced at the closing ceremonies.

Eligibility for Performance Scholarships

  • The student must be a senior in a Louisiana high school scheduled to graduate by Spring 2020.  

  • The student must be an inducted thespian with the International Thespian Society (ITS) by the Festival deadline. Scholarship money will not be awarded to non-thespians. The student must be in good standing with the ITS and Louisiana Thespians.

  • The student must have a minimum overall grade point average (high school) of 2.00, verified by an authorized school representative.

  • The student must plan to major or minor in Theatre or Communications.

  • The student must be a registered thespian at the Louisiana State Conference and attend the entire State Festival.

  • The student must be auditioned and interviewed by a panel of college judges and ITS representatives.

  • Submit all required materials (with Troupe’s Registration) by the announced deadline, including Scholarship Application, one-page typed resume, 8x10 head shot.

  • $20.00 (non-refundable) scholarship application fee included in the Registration check.

  • The student recognizes the deadline for submission of all scholarship materials is FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2019.

Technical Guidelines

Technical Scholarship Guidelines

  • One $650.00 Scholarship will be awarded in this category.

  • The emphasis during the interview will be on the candidate’s presentation of their experience as listed on their resume, and the degree of technical knowledge in the areas of proficiency.

  • Technical portfolios/documentation should be presented, which include supporting materials such as designs, sketches, photos, programs.

  • CANDIDATES SHOULD DRESS WITH A POLISHED, PROFESSIONAL APPREARANCE. JEANS, SANDALS, FLIP-FLOPS SNEAKERS, MINISKIRTS AND SOLID BLACK ARE NOT ALLOWED.

  • Five (5) minutes will be allowed for your presentation and interview.

  • Be prepared to answer questions from the judges.

  • Candidate’s Introduction must include only the candidate’s name and school.
